How to Prep Your Brand New Scuba or Snorkeling Mask
So, you’ve just picked up a new scuba or snorkel mask—congrats! 🌊 Whether it’s your first mask or a fresh upgrade, there’s one crucial step you don’t want to skip before hitting the water: Removing the factory residue to prevent fogging.
Even if you’ve got top-tier defog solution, that stubborn layer left from manufacturing will win… unless you prep your mask first.
🦷 The Toothpaste Trick (Yes, Really!)
This tried-and-true method clears the lens coating so your view underwater stays crystal clear.
Step-by-Step:
1. Choose the Right Toothpaste
Use a simple, white non-gel toothpaste (no whitening or glittery bits!).
2. Apply a Pea-Sized Amount
Smear it onto the inside of the lens using your finger or a soft cloth.
3. Gently Scrub in Circles
Spend 5–10 minutes lightly polishing the lens. Don’t forget the edges—they’re fog magnets!
4. Rinse with Lukewarm Water
Flush thoroughly, making sure to rinse out any residue hiding in corners or seams.
5. Repeat if Needed
Still fogging? Repeat the process or leave the toothpaste on overnight before rinsing again.
✨ Pro Tips
-
Never use abrasive pastes or scrubbers—they can scratch the glass.
-
After prep, use defog solution before every dive to keep your view clear.
-
Store your cleaned mask in a protective case to keep it safe from scratches.
💡 Why This Works
Toothpaste breaks down the silicone-based film left behind during production. No film = no fog. It’s cheap, easy, and makes a huge difference in your dive experience.
