What is Freediving?
Freediving is the art of breath-hold diving—exploring the underwater world without the use of scuba gear. This ancient practice dates back to cultures that dived for sponges and seafood, with mentions by Plato as early as the Archaic Period. Today, freediving has evolved into a popular sport for ocean lovers, offering a serene and challenging way to connect with the underwater world.
Course Information
Our freediving course is a self-paced 8-week program designed to help you build the skills, techniques, and confidence needed to freedive safely and effectively. Whether you're new to freediving or looking to refine your skills, this course will guide you from the basics to deeper dives, with optional spearfishing as part of your journey.
-
Flexible Training Schedule:
This course is self-paced to fit your needs and schedule. The 8-week timeline is a guideline, allowing you to attend pool sessions as often as you’d like until you feel comfortable progressing to the next step. -
Expert Instruction:
Our experienced instructors will guide you through breath-hold techniques, equalization, safety protocols, and essential freediving skills. -
Real-World Practice:
Once you're confident in basic entry techniques and apnea breath-hold times, you can participate in a boat trip to practice your skills in open water. By the end of the course, our goal is for you to confidently dive up to 40 feet for up to 2 minutes.
What’s Included in the Course?
- 8 pool sessions (held Saturdays from 8 AM to noon)
- 2 ocean diving sessions (including an optional spearfishing component for those interested)
- Access to Blue Holic instructors and ongoing pool practice sessions until you’re confident and ready
This is a training course only and does not include a PADI freediving certification.
What’s Not Included:
- Pool Entry Fee: $35 per session
- Boat Trips: $200 per trip (typically required for open water dives)
- Gear: Students must purchase their own freediving gear to ensure safety and familiarity when diving independently. Required gear includes a wetsuit, weights, long fins, socks, and gloves. All gear is available in our shop, and we offer 15% off for students.
Why do you need your own gear?
Your gear is an extension of you. Training in your own equipment helps streamline your skills, promotes safety, and builds confidence for shore dives and independent adventures after the course.
Optional Spearfishing:
If you're interested in spearfishing, you’ll need a speargun and a valid fishing license. Our final ocean session offers you the opportunity to learn sustainable hunting techniques and put your freediving skills to use in a unique way.
Sample Schedule:
-
Pool Practice (Weeks 1–4):
Learn basic entry techniques, improve breath-hold times, and master equalization. You’ll work on apnea skills and build your confidence before heading out to open water. -
First Ocean Dive:
Join our boat trip to practice freediving in the open ocean. Explore kelp forests, reefs, and practice your skills in real-world conditions. -
Pool Practice (Weeks 5–8):
Continue refining your skills, including advanced equalization techniques and extended dive times. -
Final Ocean Dive:
Put it all together with a second ocean dive session. This session includes the optional spearfishing component for those interested.
